How to choose a calming bed for your anxious dog

If you've ever spent an hour scrolling calming beds on Amazon and come away more confused than when you started, this is for you. Here's how to actually match a bed to your dog in five minutes.

Ask one question first: how does your dog sleep?

Not where. How.

  • Curls into a ball, nose tucked into tail? Get a donut bed.
  • Stretches out, legs straight? Get a flat orthopaedic mattress.
  • Burrows under blankets? Get a cave bed or a donut with a throw.
  • Sleeps with chin on a cushion / edge? Get a bolstered bed (donut or sofa style both work).

The donut bed

Best for: anxious dogs who curl tight, small-to-medium breeds, burrowers.

A raised faux-fur rim gives your dog something to press their spine and chin against. That physical pressure is calming in the same way a weighted blanket is for humans. Our Calming Donut Bed is this style.

The orthopaedic sofa

Best for: senior dogs, dogs with arthritis or joint issues, big breeds.

Memory foam that supports the hips and elbows. If your dog is over seven or over 20kg, this is almost always the right choice. Our Orthopaedic Calming Sofa is this style.

Size it right

Measure your dog nose to base of tail when stretched out. Add 15cm. That's your minimum bed length. Dogs need room to stretch, even if they usually curl — forcing them to sleep hunched makes joint issues worse.

Materials matter more than you think

Anxious dogs drool, shed and sometimes have accidents. Get a bed with:

  • A zip-off, machine-washable cover
  • A non-slip bottom (nothing stresses an anxious dog more than a bed that slides)
  • Water-resistant inner lining

Where you place it matters too

Against a wall (dogs feel safer with their back covered). Out of the main traffic flow of your home. Somewhere they can see you but aren't in the middle of things.

Give it a week. Don't force them to use it. Add a worn t-shirt that smells like you. Feed one meal a day on it. Within days most anxious dogs will claim it as their safe base.

Still unsure? Email me with your dog's breed, age and sleeping style — I'll recommend the exact right bed.
